Deputy Editor

We will have an opening for our deputy editor position commencing in February 2019, which will start with taking over the reins from our existing deputy editor, and beginning with commissioning and editing our AW19 issue alongside our editor Caroline.

You will work remotely, but will be required to meet with the team at least twice a year to plan the upcoming issues. These meetings usually takes place in London in March and September.

The role is very flexible and can be managed around other work, as the workflow has peaks and troughs. For example, some weeks we can be very busy with commissioning, then it will be quiet for a while until copy starts coming in.

As an independent magazine, our budgets are tight, but there is a fee which is paid on completion of each issue. Please get in touch for more info.

Overview of responsibilities:

  • Attend editorial meetings twice a year to discuss ideas and plan content.

  • Contribute ideas for content through research and discussions with editor.

  • Commission around half of the features for the magazine. Contacting home owners, makers etc, then commissioning photographers, writers and illustrators, giving brief guidelines and setting deadlines, as well as dealing with contributor queries.

  • Carrying out first edit on copy as it is filed, and then liaising with sub-editor and designer on work flow.

  • Consulting with editor on any business development plans and ideas to help move the magazine forward and grow.

Skills required:

  • Proven ability to edit and write to a high standard.

  • Strong understanding of the ethos and content of 91 Magazine and it’s audience.

  • Ability to come up with creative ideas for content, as well as solutions to problems.

  • Strong organisational skills
