Start the day with a coffee and a traditional Swedish fika at Vete-katten. Vete-katten is a classical Swedish cafe with a long history. It opened in 1928 and is still located in the beautiful old building close to the central station. The cafe has several entrances, and a labyrinth of corridors, rooms and stairwells that criss-cross the old turn-of-the century building. Their pastries and bread are made from scratch using the best ingredients, with no additives and are simply divine. The friendly, warm atmosphere and the traditional, yet stylish interior mixed with the sweet scent in the air takes you back in time, and will set you up for a full day of exploring.

Next, take the subway to Hornstull, in the south part of Stockholm. From here, there’s lots to explore on foot. Hornstulls Market is just a few minutes walk from the subway, located right on the waterfront. With a view over the water, you can stroll around and shop for vintage goods, clothing, crafts, and lots of delicious street food. The vendor’s varies from time to time so it is definitely worth going again and again. The market is open every Saturday from 11:00-17:00 from April until the end of September, and as always with markets, be sure to get there early to nab the best buys!

The idea to open Afro Art came from the owners desire to awaken awareness of crafts from African countries, and it has been open in the city since 1967. The vibrant colours in the store cannot fail to make you smile. The colourful details mixed with graphic prints goes so well with bright Scandinavian style. If you are a fabric fan you will discover the most beautiful and unique cloth here. They have two stores in Stockholm and one in Gothenburg.

If you’re ready to eat again, then stop off at Kalf & Hansen – a small Nordic organic fast food restaurant located in the corner of beautiful Mariatorget with a view over the park. The dishes on the menu are named after different Nordic cities and are a selection of seasonal vegetables and meats.

Brandstationen got it’s name as it was originally located in a 100 year old fire station. The store offers a great selection of eclectic vintage goods mixed with plants and new designs in a homely atmosphere. Fully packed with beautiful items, you are greeted by a bright and inviting entrance and as you walk through the store it gets darker and cosier with each step – it’s unlikely you will leave here empty handed.

You’ll need to jump on the subway over to Vasastan, but well worth a visit is Betonggruvan. Owner Josefine Halfwordson designs and creates unique furniture which is beautiful and functional, for example, an open shelving system can be adjusted for your needs with several additions such as hooks and candleholders. They also stock a selection of unique pieces from other small brands such as Stenhuggardottern, who make functional objects out of limestone.
