PLAY at The Forge

If you've read the latest issue of 91 then you'll know all about The Forge, a beautiful Bristol workspace for the creative and the curious. Founder Silkie Lloyd is here to share the secrets of PLAY: The Forge's unique monthly gathering...

It seems to me that, as creative freelancers and small indie businesses, we are so busy that we often don't find time to work on the things that really matter. This is what inspired me to start PLAY, a {free} monthly  gathering for creatives, freelancers & independent companies. I like to think of it as a playgroup for creatives!

PLAY is a space for us to work on our ideas: experiment, think big, make plans, dream awhile. The day begins around the long table with tea and introductions, and a few words about the projects that we’ve brought along to work on. Often, this becomes a longer conversation where ideas are shared and support and advice offered.

If you come along to a PLAY session, you may choose to bring along a notebook, pencils, camera, your latest make, props or mood boards, (even a laptop if you have to!). Here you can read a book, share stories and make new friends. Drink coffee and eat cake! This is time for you.

Typical PLAY activities include: table top styling; product photoshoots; journaling; mini stop motion films; hand lettering; reading; sketchbooks or just exploring ideas and sharing stories with new friends.

All manner of people come along: jewellers, illustrators, designer-makers, crafters, small shop owners, art directors , willow sculptors, writers and graphic designers. Anyone is welcome, and folk can stay for as long or little as they like.

It's a time for self initiated work rather than a structured workshop. I urge people to give themselves permission to step away from the day-to-day, and to explore all of those ideas that really matter. If you have a project you are working on just for fun, and you'd like to come along, please do. I’d love to meet you.
